Brewpub Changes The Face Of Craft Beer
Eddyline restaurant and brewery is a perfect example of a Colorado brew pub serving great craft beer. Located in Buena Vista, Co. nestled in the mountains around some of the best kayaking spots Colorado has to offer, they are one of the few destination spots for great craft beer in the Rockies. Not only can you come in and enjoy some great wood fire pizza but they are serving some of the best craft beer any brew pub in Colorado has to offer.
Themes are so important to distinguishing ones beer form the next. Belgium themes typically revolve around biblical titles and phrases and the church. Russian River Brewing Co. has a slew of Belgium style beers that have the names the likes of “Damnation”, “Sanctification”,”Consecration”. Lost Abbey Brewing from California holds names such as “Angel Share”, “Inferno”,”Devotion”,”Judgment Day”. Having names that jump out and grab you with a label that backs it up is almost as important as the beer inside the bottle. There are currently 1600 breweries in the United States and if your theme and label don’t grab the buyer, your beer will be lost on the rack.
Scott Kimball has been with Eddyline for just over a year and a half and he loves it. He explained to me the themes behind their beer and the new expansion of their brew pub. Eddyline features all outdoor themes for their beer which is pretty unique for the world of craft beer; however fitting for their location. Drag Bag Lager is meant to be tied to your raft as you hit the rapids. Crank Yanker IPA is designed for the best thirst quencher after a hard day of mountain bike riding. Kicking Back Amber Lager is exactly what you should drink when your day is complete and your sitting in front of a fire with the stars over your head. Each theme follows Outdoor Sports and activities and it is what separates Eddyline brew pub from all other micro breweries and brew pubs in the state.
Eddyline brew pub is also scheduled for a major expansion in the late summer of 2011. A fifteen barrel brew house is in order with a fully automated canning line. Tap house will be connected for draft and growlers but it’s the canning line that will change the face of craft beer. While most craft beer today is served in bottles (12oz to 1.5 liter bottles) Eddyline is taking a different approach; one that not only fits with their theme but with Colorado’s average beer drinker. This brew pub will be canning their craft beer versus bottling it. Cans you say? Aren’t all those macro breweries such as Coors, Miller, and Anheuser Busch canning their lite lagers as well? They are. But there is a reason Eddyline is using cans over bottles.
Colorado is an outdoor state with tons of activities and sports that keep you busy and working up a sweat and not crammed in a busy city or in a cubical. People who live in Colorado ski, snowboard, mountain bike, kayak, raft, run, cycle, ect. You name it, they do it. When the weekend comes they jet out of town, to places like Bunea Vista and get outdoors. This is a major problem for most breweries. Sunlight skunks beer. It will sour it, change the flavor, and overall kill the beer. While most micro breweries bottle their beer in glass, few use cans. A large reason behind that has to do with macro brewing companies having canned their beer for the last thirty years. Separation at all costs from macro breweries is key for the craft beer industry. This is why most micro breweries choose to use glass bottles in all sizes over cans.
Colorado being such an outdoor state glass just won’t work. You can’t drag glass over the rapids, you can’t hike with bottles in the sun, and you can’t snowboard down a mountain with 12oz bottles in your bag. If you crash they’ll break. Solution? Cans! Oskar Blues Brewery in Longmont, Co. is one of the first breweries to use cans for their beer. They pioneered the idea in the micro brewery industry. While most fled from cans because of macro breweries, Oskar Blues embraced it; hoping that a similarity between light lagers in a can would be a little less daunting when trying craft beer in cans.
Eddyline brew pub will be following the footsteps laid out before them by Oskar Blues. However they are changing the game and the face of craft beer. Eddyline will not only be canning their beer in their 15 barrel brew house, but they will be canning in 16oz tall boys. This is something that has never been done before in the history of craft beer. Typically tallboys, 16oz, were considered the cheapest beer possible for consumption for years. Only the worst was placed into a can let alone a can big enough to have two servings at once. Slitz, Pabst, Coors, and Miller come to mind when you hear Tall Boy. No longer. Soon Eddylinew brew pub will come to mind.
With the shift of craft beer into cans Eddyline will own the market on canned craft beer in Colorado. No longer will you have to worry about skunky beer from sunlight because of their cans. They are offering you 16oz, typical draft pour, instead of 12oz that Oskar Blues serves; beer and a half per can versus just one beer. There is nothing more satisfying than holding a can that was meant for the hand of Shaquille O’neal and toasting as if it were your own goblet. Now you can take your craft beer down the slopes, over the rapids, up the mountain, and to the fire pit. Eddyline just changed the face of craft beer forever. Expect to see 16oz tall boys of craft beer in your local wine and spirit shops around Colorado by the end of the Summer.
